This Is What Joy Looks Like

Notes from My First Live Set: Beats, Becoming, and the Beauty of Getting It Wrong

It was supposed to be two hours, a neat little window carved out for celebration, for sound, for connection and for sharing something new. But time has its own rhythm when joy is involved, and somewhere along the way, two hours turned into three. The tracks kept coming, the energy kept building, and I found myself right there in the mess and magic of it all. Three hours later, I was still dancing, still playing, still completely immersed in something that felt bigger than the set itself.

My first live DJ stream over on Twitch (kicks in around 1 min 20 secs), on Easter weekend to celebrate my birthday. And, somewhere in between the nerves, the excitement of connecting with loved ones all over the world in a new way it was everything I didn’t know I needed.

There were missed cues. A few clumsy transitions. The occasional wobble and buffer (minutes 27-29 the stream dropped out.) But for once, I didn’t try to fix it. I didn’t shrink. I stayed with it, and let it move through me. The nerves, the sweat, the laughter, the beat.

As someone who’s spent years holding myself to impossible standards, the recovering perfectionist in me noticed every missed cue, every fumble. But I stayed with it and learnt as I went along and I let it be part of the music.

There was joy in the letting go. In choosing presence over perfection.

It wasn’t perfect. It was alive.

To everyone who tuned in, showed up in the chat, behind the screen or in spirit, sent a message, or held space from afar, thank you. It wasn’t just a celebration, it was a letting go, and in that letting go, I found something far more alive than perfection ever promised.

So, with that in mind, you can now tune in once a month to catch me streaming live. Next one coming up in May!
