"The Path Within:" #3 Asana - Feeling grounded and strong in your body | mindful movement

Asana is the third limb of yoga, and often the most visible and well known.

This is an 8-part series of 5-minute practices inspired by the 8-limbs of yoga and offers something for everyone with an option to try something new outside of what modern life wants you to think yoga is.

To honour International Yoga Day, I’m sharing “The Path Within”, a FREE 8-part video series. Each practice is just 5 minutes. Each one inspired by one of the eight limbs.

Practice 3: Asana

Asana is the third limb of yoga, and often the most visible one. But it was never meant to be performance. At its heart, asana is about preparing the body to sit in stillness. It’s a practice of attention, stability, and ease — not achievement.

The original intention behind asana was to support the nervous system, build internal awareness, and help you find a felt sense of connection in your own body. When we move with presence, we create conditions for regulation. Our breath slows. The body softens. The mind becomes less reactive.

In this practice, we’ll explore a gentle variation of Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation that is simplified, accessible, and grounded. This is less about tradition, more about felt experience. We’ll honour the light within you, not by striving, but by softening into each shape.

To integrate: This variation of Surya Namaskar is a reminder: movement doesn’t need to be complex or performative to be meaningful. When we move with presence, the body becomes a vehicle for regulation, the breath a rhythm of remembrance.

These shapes aren’t just transitions — they are rituals. Each one gives you a chance to practice returning: to your breath, your body, your now.

Ask yourself:

  • Which of these movements brought you the most ease?

  • Can one of them become a reset point during your day, a shape that brings you back into yourself?

  • What would change if you moved to feel more, not just to do more or go further?

The body remembers what the mind forgets. And movement, when offered gently, becomes medicine.

Which shape will you carry forward as a gesture of honouring yourself?
